Floodplain Management

Floodplain Management assists property owners in meeting the requirements of the Village of Trempealeau Floodplain Ordinance and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which is managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). https://www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program

Floodplain maps help property owners determine if their property is at risk for flooding and if the property is within a regulatory floodplain.  Regulatory floodplain maps (also known as effective floodplain maps) are used by lenders and the insurance industry to determine flood insurance requirements.  The Village of Trempealeau is a part of the NFIP and because of that the Village actively participates in floodplain management.

The goals of the NFIP are to reduce flood hazards by:

  • Regulating floodplain activities
  • Adopting floodplain policies
  • Mapping floodplains
  • Educating the public about floods and floodplains

Development in the Floodplain

There are two main floodplain zoning districts inside the Village of Trempealeau Territory.

(1) The Floodway District (FW) is the channel of a river or stream and those portions of the floodplain adjoining the channel required to carry the regional floodwaters and are contained within AE Zones as shown on the FIRM.
(2) The Flood-Fringe District (FF) is that portion of the between the regional flood limits and the floodway and displayed as AE Zones on the FIRM.

Navigating development in the floodplain requires careful consideration due to limitations imposed by the Village Floodplain Ordinance. It is advisable to initiate discussions with the Village Administrator at the earliest stages of your planning. Keep in mind that the floodplain review process is time-consuming, so it’s essential to factor this into your project timeline.
